Aspect Ratio Calculator Width Height

Calculate screen dimensions (height/width/area, in inches or cm) from diagonal measurement and aspect ratio. Say you have a photo that is 1600 x 1200 pixels, but your blog only has space for a photo 400 pixels wide. To find the new height of your photo—while preserving the aspect ratio—you would need to do the following calculation: (original height / original width) x new width = new height (1200 / 1600) x 400 = 300. The aspect ratio of an image defines the proportion between its width and height. It is always expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (x:y). For example, images with the aspect ratio of 16:9, no matter how big or small, will always have the width of 16 and the height of 9 units of the same length. Therefore, 16 centimeters wide and 9 centimeters high image as well as 32 centimeters wide and 18 centimeters high image has the same 16:9. Aspect Ratio Calculator The Aspect Ratio Calculator allows you to calculate the missing value within a ratio, this is useful for resizing images, scaling objects, models and for calculating related ratios including height, width and diagonal ratios.

The Aspect Ratio of a video/television image is the ratio of its width to its height.

Traditionally, televisions have had an aspect ratio of 4:3, ie a screen width proportion of 4 to a screen height of 3. For every unit change in height there is a corresponding change in width of 1.33 (4/3). This shape gives the appearance of a square-like box.

More recent televisions - wide screen - for the most part, have an aspect ratio of 16:9. This shape moves towards a more elongated form similar to that experienced in the cinema. The change in width is now 1.78 (16/9) units of measurement to every unit change in height.

The size of a television is usually described in diagonal inches. Inch size refers to the length of the diagonal.

The diagonal is the distance from the top left corner of the visible screen to the bottom right corner. Alternatively, this can be the distance from top right to the bottom left corner.

A television with a 4:3 Aspect Ratio will always have a larger viewing area than one with a 16:9 Aspect Ratio for the same diagonal size.

You can see displayed a diagram of a 4:3 Aspect Ratio and a 16:9 Aspect Ratio. Seeing is believing!

The Aspect Ratio calculator, among other purposes, can be used to resize a photo while retaining the original aspect ratio ie the original width to height proportion.

  • Below select an aspect ratio of 4:3, 16:9 or input ANY width/height ratio in which you may be interested.
  • Input the width, height or diagonal.
  • You can also calculate to any decimal places you want to.
  • Then press 'Get Width, Height, Diagonal'.

What is Aspect Ratio and its usage?

Aspect Ratio Size Calculator

Aspect ratio is a term that describes the ratio between the original size of a geometric shape and other sizes of them.
Nowadays Aspect Ratio term is used in common to describe images, video, movies and by electronic industry to describe the screen size of different devices such as TV, notebooks, tablets and even mobile phones. Wikipedia describes aspect ratio of an image like 'the proportional relationship between its width and its height'.
For electronic devices we have some default aspect ratios values that are used by manufacturers to describe their devices screen's.

How our aspect ratio calculator works?

In our aspect ratio calculators you can calculate aspect ratio value of an image or object, even new sizes for images that you want to resize.
You can use our aspect ratio calculator to convert the size of an image from original one to another sizes keeping the shape of the object and make him look natural without stretches.
If you want to calculate aspect ratio by your own, then maybe these forumlas will help you:

Aspect ratio calculation formula:

Aspect Ratio formula can be used in many ways in calculations.
This is the generic formula for calculating Aspect Ratio:

  • Aspect Ratio = Width / Height

Aspect Ratio Calculator Width Height Measurement

Now, let's say we want to calculate aspect ratio for an image that has 300px width and 150px height.
Aspect Ratio = Width / Height
Aspect Ratio = 300 / 150 = 2 / 1 => Aspect ratio of our image is 2:1
